Many people criticize the legal profession and seek to limit the constitutional right to jury trials.  There is a clarion call by politicians and lobbyists to protect giant corporations from those who are seeking fair compensation for being injured by a company’s shoddy or poorly designed products.  What has gone overlooked is the benefit not only to their client, but to society as a whole, that injury attorneys all over the country have obtained. 

When lawyers go to court and prove that a product in question is defective and that it could have been made better and safer, companies are then compelled to produce safer and better designed products rather than face repeated juries.  If the corporations were not held responsible in a courtroom, they may not have had the incentives to protect their customers.  Thanks to the efforts of many lawyers and the courage of their clients, hundreds of products that we interact with each day are safer than they would have been had corporations not been brought to court and made to be responsible for their negligence.

Consider the American automobile and compare what was sold to us just 50 years ago.  It was lawyers who introduced the concept of crash worthiness, which is the belief that we could design and build a car which would help protect the occupants from serious injury when involved in a crash.     Below you will find a video of a crash test between an old and new model Chevy.  Notice how much better protected the occupants of the new Chevy are compared to the old.
