Dangers of I-4 Driving
On July 24, 2007, one person was killed and three more were injured in a car crash involving three vehicles on Interstate 4 (I-4). After veering off the freeway, one car went thru a guardrail, landing on a power pole. After being ejected from the vehicles, one of the injured victims had to be airlifted to Orlando Regional Medical Center (ORMC). The remaining two injured victims were transported to ORMC and Florida Hospital by ambulance. Traffic was backed up for 6 - 7 miles for hours while the accident was cleared.
On March 17, 2008, a crash on an I-4 exit ramp left one driver dead and two passengers seriously injured. The victim attempted to exit an off-ramp driving too fast, and the roads were wet due to recent rain. The driver lost control, hit a tree, spun and collided with another tree. The exit ramp’s speed limit is noted to be low due to a large curve coming off of I-4.
On June 5, 2009, a devastating crash in Orange County, Florida killed four people when a 25 year old driver lost control and the vehicle veered off the road. The two passengers killed were both ejected when the vehicle overturned. Victims were taken to ORMC.
These are just a sparse example of the hundreds of fatal car accidents that have occurred on I-4 in Orlando, Florida. For the thousands of drivers that make this commute daily, it’s easy to see how distracted driving, stop-and-go traffic, and even inexperienced drivers can cause such serious accidents. Accidents such as these can cause serious injuries and even death for crash victims. Injuries such as concussions, internal bleeding, whiplash, soft-tissue contusions, and an assortment of other injuries can change your life, or the life of someone in the car with you, just as they have changed the lives of hundreds of crash victims.
With such initiatives as Click It or Ticket, the Text Banning Bill currently in Florida Legislature, and the hundreds of local safety campaigns in the Orlando Area, its easy to see local agencies are concerned about the safety of the drivers on I-4 and the surrounding roadways. While the initiative of each of these campaigns helps to educate drivers, the root of the issue remains: it is the responsibility of those driving a motor vehicle to be alert, responsive, and at all times remain in control of the vehicle they operate. Practices such as texting while driving, putting makeup on during a commute, talking on a cell phone, even tending to passengers in the car have all been historically shown to cause car crashes that result in serious injury, even death.
